Book Review: Funny Story by Emily Henry Rating: ★★★★☆

Emily Henry's Funny Story—a heartfelt, witty, and emotionally layered read that blends humor with meaningful introspection in a way only she can pull off. Her writing feels light and easy to fall into, but there’s always a quiet depth running beneath the surface. She has this beautiful way of wrapping complex emotions in charming prose, making the hard truths of life feel a little easier to face.

At the heart of the story is Daphne, a children’s librarian who thought she had it all figured out. She had uprooted her entire life for Peter—the man she believed was her forever. She built her world around him, only to have it all come crashing down when he realizes he’s actually in love with his best friend. Just like that, Daphne is left behind in a city she only knows through Peter’s eyes—his favorite places, his friends, his world. It’s not just heartbreak; it’s a full identity crisis.

Forced to stay in this unfamiliar place, Daphne finds herself sharing an apartment with Peter’s ex’s ex (yes, you read that right). At first, her new roommate is just a warm body and a mutual casualty of heartbreak, but as they slowly learn to navigate their grief together, a fragile but beautiful bond begins to grow. What starts as shared pain becomes shared healing.

One of the things I loved most about this story is Daphne’s journey of self-discovery. She begins to unpack how much of her unhappiness is tied not just to Peter leaving, but to the way she perceived her entire situation. Through her evolving friendship with her roommate, she starts to question the narratives she’s created—about herself, about others, and about love.

The emotional arc is so relatable—especially for anyone who’s ever had to rebuild their life from scratch after losing something they thought was permanent. There’s humor, vulnerability, and those little moments of insight that make you stop and highlight a line because it hits just right.

If you're in the mood for a story that balances heartbreak with hope, and growth with giggles, Funny Story will not disappoint. It’s tender, funny, and ultimately a reminder that sometimes the most unexpected connections are the ones that help us find ourselves again.
